Palmer was once the center of some of the largest coal mining operations in the area. Coal still plays a vital part in the economy of the community, but the day of the big "company" mine is past. The citizens of Palmer pride themselves on heritage of hard work and close family ties. Palmer is the home of the Miner's Museum. This Museum tells the story of the miners and their sacrifices. Near Palmer is the entrance to the Savage Gulf Natural Area which consists of more than 11,400 + acres of bluffs, timber, trails, and beautiful waterfalls. The 70 mile trail system offers so much to nature lovers.
